In the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup match between South Africa and Pakistan at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, South Africa secured a one-wicket victory, almost ending Pakistan’s hopes of making it to the final four of the tournament. The Proteas now have five wins out of six games, while Pakistan has only two wins with three games remaining.

During South Africa’s chase of 271, they faced a few challenges but managed to secure the win, largely thanks to Aiden Markram’s impressive innings of 91.

In the first innings, Pakistan was bowled out for 270 in 46.4 overs. Tabraiz Shamsi took four wickets for 60 runs, while Marco Jansen finished with figures of 3/49. Emerging pacer Gerald Coetzee also contributed with two wickets for 2/42.

Pakistan lost their openers, Abdullah Shafique and Imamul Haq, for low scores, and captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan attempted to build a partnership, but they couldn’t accelerate the scoring. Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals, with players like Iftikhar Ahmed, Saud Shakeel, and Shadab Khan contributing with some aggressive batting. Ultimately, Pakistan posted a total of 270 runs.

In South Africa’s chase, Quinton de Kock and skipper Temba Bavuma both made contributions but were dismissed. Aiden Markram and Rassie Van der Dussen took control of the innings and built a crucial partnership. However, two quick wickets gave Pakistan some hope. Markram and David Miller added 70 runs for the fifth wicket, but they were also eventually dismissed by Shaheen Afridi and Wasim Jr.

In the end, South Africa managed to secure a one-wicket victory, which further improved their position in the tournament, while Pakistan faced a challenging situation with only two wins out of their six games and three matches remaining in the group stage.
