Angelo Mathews achieves a unique record, becomes first-ever batter to be timed out in international cricket in 100 years

New batter should be available on the crease within two minutes but Angelo Mathews was not

On Monday, Angelo Mathews achieved a unique and unfortunate milestone in international cricket during the ICC World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh in Delhi. He became the first batter in the history of the sport to be timed out.

In cricket, when a batter is dismissed, the next batsman in the lineup is expected to be prepared to face a delivery within two minutes of the previous wicket falling. However, Mathews found himself in a peculiar situation. Just as he was about to take his position at the crease, the strap of his helmet suddenly broke, rendering it unsafe for play. In response to this unexpected equipment malfunction, the former Sri Lanka captain promptly requested a replacement helmet.

While Angelo Mathews was waiting for a new helmet to be brought to him, Shakib, the opposing team’s player, seized the opportunity to appeal to the umpires. After considering the circumstances, the umpires ultimately made the decision to rule Mathews as timed out, marking a rare and unusual occurrence in the sport.
