Inzamam-ul-Haq Resigns as chief selector after controversy with PCB during WC 2023

The Pakistan cricket team’s Chief Selector, Inzamam-ul-Haq, tendered his resignation from his position on Monday. This decision followed the emergence of reports citing a “conflict of interest” on social media.

Inzamam-ul-haq issued a statement, saying, “People tend to speak without conducting proper research. Questions were raised regarding my role, so I concluded that it was in the best interest to step down.”

He further expressed his willingness to cooperate with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) if they wished to investigate the matter. Inzamam stated, “If PCB wants to investigate me, I am available. People are making claims without substantial evidence, and if there is any proof, I urge them to present it. I have already asked PCB to undertake an inquiry.”

Inzamam vehemently denied any association with the player agent company in question, emphasizing, “I have no connection with the player agent company, and such allegations are deeply upsetting.”

He also mentioned his intention to discuss the matter with PCB officials once the situation returns to normal, saying, “I was informed that a five-member committee had been formed during a phone call. Consequently, I informed the board that, during the ongoing investigation, it would be more appropriate for me to resign. Once everything settles down, I will engage in discussions with PCB again.”

Rumors had circulated about Inzamam’s alleged ownership of shares in a company affiliated with the players’ agent Talha Rehmani. This revelation raised concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest, especially considering Rehmani’s representation of several top Pakistani cricketers, such as Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

There were additional queries concerning whether Inzamam’s dual role as both Chief Selector and a shareholder in a company representing elite cricketers could have influenced player selection decisions.

It’s important to note that Inzamam-ul-Haq was appointed as the Chief Selector of the men’s national team on August 7 by the then-newly appointed head of the PCB Management Committee, Zaka Ashraf, after Ashraf assumed his role in July. Prior to this appointment, Inzamam served as the chief selector from 2016 to 2019, and during his tenure, the team he selected clinched the Champions Trophy under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed in 2017.
