Muhammad Hafeez, the ex-Pakistan captain, is leading the race to assume the position of chairman of the senior selection committee. This role became available following the departure of Inzamam ul Haq amid allegations of a ‘Conflict of Interest’.
According to a PCB source, there’s a possibility of another former Test captain, Younis Khan, securing a significant role within the national setup. This development comes alongside meetings involving former captains Hafeez and Khan, along with current players Wahab Riaz and Sohail Tanvir, who convened with Zaka Ashraf, head of PCB’s cricket management committee in Lahore.
During these discussions, Zaka had a separate meeting with Younis, reportedly urging him to consider accompanying the team to Australia and New Zealand for the Test and T20 series.Additionally, Zaka engaged in video link conversations on Tuesday with other former cricket stalwarts based in Karachi, despite their ongoing media commitments.
Babar Azam, the embattled skipper, has been called for a meeting on Wednesday to address the team’s disappointing performance in the recently concluded World Cup, where they secured a fifth-place finish.
Zaka has arranged a meeting with the under-fire captain, Babar Azam, slated for Wednesday, during which it’s likely that the batsman will receive another opportunity to lead the team in the upcoming tours of Australia and New Zealand,” revealed a PCB insider.
It’s been disclosed that most former players have advised Zaka to persist with Babar, at least for now. They suggested a wait-and-see approach, recommending that Zaka observe Babar’s performance as captain during the Australian and New Zealand tours. If the team continues to struggle, akin to their World Cup performance, changes could be contemplated before the next World T20 Cup.
Moreover, the PCB source indicated that the team’s director and coach, Mickey Arthur, along with head coach Grant Bradburn, have been summoned to participate in the meeting alongside Babar
